In June 2018, MiraDry was officially approved by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare as a "microwave underarm sweat treatment device." Its effectiveness and safety have also been recognized by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and it has been approved for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis, axillary odor, and hair loss.
That's a complete lie! It is not approved for treating underarm odor.
Minutes of the Medical Devices and In Vitro Diagnostics Subcommittee of the Pharmaceutical Affairs and Food Sanitation Council (December 2017, 12)
Explicitly
The results of the clinical trials also showed that the clinical trial criteria for odor were not met, and so the review concluded that, overall, the product is only suitable for treating hyperhidrosis, and that no evidence of odor reduction was found.
It states that MiraDry is only for primary axillary hyperhidrosis. In other words, the device for reducing armpit sweating is approved by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, but it is not approved for armpit odor because it is ineffective. In this way, fraudulent advertisements stand out as if they have the stamp of approval of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. If doctors are unable to confirm the effectiveness of the product and are intentionally deceiving patients in this way to attract customers, it is unfortunate because it tarnishes the image of cosmetic medicine. MiraDry, which is effective for primary axillary hyperhidrosis and is a device approved by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, is being denigrated by using it incorrectly.
MiraDry treatment has also caused fatalities.
I wonder if legitimate medical treatment is being provided at such beauty clinics. More than half of the patients who first visit our clinic have either had no odor reduction after undergoing MiraDry treatment, or the odor has temporarily decreased but returned to its original state. I wonder if the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare did not anticipate nurses performing treatments. In cosmetic surgery clinics that prioritize profits and neglect patient care, nurses are always performing treatments.Fatal accidentThere have been many other cases of problems other than those mentioned above. We would appreciate it if patients considering miraDry as a treatment for underarm odor would consider it after understanding these facts.
